Requirements:

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Manufacturing Engineering Manager determines the most cost-effective and safe processes, methods, systems, tooling, fixtures, equipment and plant layout to be used in the manufacture of Wausau Equipment products. Evaluates labor and operating costs for compliance with standards and stated cost objectives. Develops short and long term manufacturing strategies and capital requirements and actively participates in the development and introduction of new products.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Implement lean manufacturing techniques and processes (J.I.T., Continuous Flow, Kanban, Manufacturing Cells, etc.) that will improve safety and reduce manufacturing labor costs, product through-put time, W.I.P. (Work In Process) inventory levels and overall manufacturing operating costs, while striving to attain World Class Manufacturing status.
  • Develops and implements manufacturing systems and operating procedures (standard work instructions) to support and enhance manufacturing techniques and processes.
  • Evaluates, justifies and installs new equipment, tooling and fixtures to support and enhance those manufacturing techniques and processes. Leads the effort to create the annual CAPEX plan as well as 3 to 5-year CAPEX plans.
  • Continually monitors and evaluates plant operating costs, both indirect and period, for compliance with budgeted operating cost levels.
  • Continually develops and upgrades labor standard database for use in labor standards applications, cost evaluations and product costing.
  • Evaluates and recommends plant layout changes and modifications to enhance space utilization, material flow, employee safety and product throughput.
  • Evaluates and recommends design and bill of material revisions that support safety improvements, product quality, production efficiency, and inventory accuracy.
  • Develops new transactional methods to reduce/streamline work order processing time in a manner that supports lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Actively participates in the development of new products to ensure compliance with manufacturing and processing strategies, product quality objectives, tooling objectives, implementation dates and product cost goals.
  • Develops preventive maintenance schedules, equipment spare parts stocking plans, and coordinates outside service for equipment and buildings and grounds.
  • Displays a positive attitude that encourages subordinates and co-workers towards success.
  • Supervises employees engaged in manufacturing engineering activities and the maintenance department.
  • Enforces safety rules and regulations. Ensures department and surrounding areas are clean and orderly.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or time study data. Ability to write reports and standard documentation. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Requires the ability to operate various equipment to include a computer, stopwatch, and various office equipment. Requires a good understanding of tool making and the manufacturing process.
  • Able to read and use all precision measuring devices and equipment including micrometers, tape measure, dial calipers and calculator.
  • Knowledge and safe use of hand tools, forklift and overhead crane.
  • Knowledge and use of fabrication, machining, welding and assembly procedures/processes such as drill press, lathe, shears, brake press, etc. Knowledge of welding techniques and symbols.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude/ability.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, JDE (preferred), Solid Works (preferred), AutoCAD, and Access.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Able to work independently and with a high degree of accuracy for reporting purposes.
  • Must have a good driving record and be able to become an authorized driver for the company.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment including steel toe shoes, safety glasses/goggles and hearing protection.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field is preferred. Prior experience performing in a position with supervisory responsibilities preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years previous experience in a related manufacturing environment required.
  • Knowledge of lean fundamentals, continuous flow manufacturing, and project implementations that drive the team concept within the business.
